Conversation Starters: Be Ready to Stand

Posted by Karah

CONNECTION POINT: God works in people’s lives through the influence of the Holy Spirit.

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: We often seek jobs, positions, and opportunities for our own benefit. We gravitate toward those jobs and responsibilities that we might feel especially skilled for and certainly the ones we’d enjoy. There’s nothing wrong with that, but we need to realize that God has placed us in a specific situation—working a certain job, living in a particular location, or surrounded by different people—for a greater purpose: to point to Him and further His kingdom.

Concept: Be Ready to Stand

Preschool

Acts 2

LIFE POINT: Jesus’ friends were meeting together. Suddenly they heard a sound like a strong wind. It filled the house where they were meeting. The men began to speak in different languages. Jesus’ friends were able to tell people from different parts of the world about Jesus. The people could understand them and were surprised to hear them speaking. Peter told the people about Jesus. Many people believed what Peter said. They wanted to obey God and be baptized. The people who believed began to meet together every day. They learned more about what God wanted them to do. They met at the temple (church), and in each other’s homes. The church friends shared everything they had. They ate meals together. They helped each other whenever someone had a need. The church continued to grow every day.

LIVE IT OUT: Talk with your child about the things he did at church this week. Talk about friends in his class. Help your child begin to understand that the church is the people who meet together as well as the building. Read together the Bible Verse: “The church met together. Acts 2:46”

Kids

Acts 1:4-11

LIFE POINT: Jesus met with the disciples again. “Do not leave Jerusalem,” He said. Jesus wanted them to wait there for the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised the disciples that when the Holy Spirit came to them they would receive power—power to tell people about Him! He said, “You will be My witnesses in Jerusalem. You will be My witnesses in Judea and Samaria. You will be My witnesses to the ends of the earth!” Then, the disciples saw Jesus going up into the air. They saw Him disappear into a cloud. They kept watching the sky to see what would happen. Suddenly, two men stood by the disciples. The men were dressed in white. They said, “Why are you looking up? Jesus has been taken to heaven. But He will return the same way He left!”

LIVE IT OUT: Talk with your child about the Holy Spirit. Encourage her to tell you what she knows about the Holy Spirit. Find several verses in the Bible that tell about the Holy Spirit and read them with your child. Pray, thanking God that the Holy Spirit lives in each Christian.

Students

Esther 2:5-10, 15-17

THE POINT: God is always at work behind the scenes.
• When have you been at the right place at the right time?
• When have you recognized God at work in your own background?
• When have you found yourself completely outside your comfort zone?
• What opportunities exist for you right now to be a person of influence? Discuss the following quote:

“Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened.”(1) —Billy Graham

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: Share with your student times when you have felt God bringing you closer to Him. Consider how you felt in the midst of those times and whether it seemed big or small.
• COMMUNITY: God equips His children with specific gifts. Take time to help your student determine some of his or her gifts and how he or she can use them to help the church.
• CULTURE: Pray with your student this week for those experiencing difficulties and that God would use those circumstances to accomplish His purposes.

Conversation Starters: I Am a Light

Posted by Karah

CONNECTION POINT: Christians should forgive others to show the love of Jesus.

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Sin and darkness abound in our world. It always has, but our culture has become more open and blatant about sin. Worse, our society is increasingly embracing and endorsing sin, no longer even calling it sin. But sin is still sin. When we come to Christ, the Light of the world, and live as light, we present a sharp and inviting contrast to the darkness of sin.

Concept: I Am a Light

Preschool

Luke 15:11-24

LIFE POINT: Jesus told a story about a father and his two sons: The younger son told his father he wanted his part of the family money. The father gave the son what he asked for. The son moved far away and began to do many wrong things. He spent all of his money. He had no food to eat. So he went to work taking care of pigs. The son remembered that his father’s workers had food to eat. He decided to go home and work for his father. While the son was still far away, the father saw him. The father ran to him and hugged and kissed him. He called to his helpers to bring the best robe and sandals for his son. He told the helpers to cook a big dinner. The father wanted to celebrate because his son had come home.

LIVE IT OUT: Print in the center of a sheet of paper: God loves me. Give your child dot painters to decorate the paper. Read the words to him. Remind him that God loves him no matter what he does or what happens. Say a prayer together thanking God for His love.

Kids

Matthew 18:21-35

LIFE POINT: Peter came to Jesus one day and asked, “How many times should I forgive my brother, seven times?” Jesus answered that seven times would not be enough, but 70 times seven. Jesus told a story to explain. A king wanted his servants to pay back money they owed. One servant owed with no way to pay the king. The king told the servant to sell everything he owned. The servant fell to his knees and promised that he would pay the king everything. The king felt sorry for the servant. The king forgave the debt found a fellow servant that owed him money. The servant would not forgive his debt, but threw him in prison until he could pay what he owed. When the king heard, he was angry and sent the first servant to prison. When he finished the story, Jesus told Peter that everyone should forgive others the way God forgives them.

LIVE IT OUT: Remind your child that we should forgive others because God forgives us. Help your child memorize this week’s verse, Ephesians 4:32. Challenge her to recite the verse if she is in a situation requiring her to forgive someone.

Students

Ephesians 5:8-14

THE POINT: Shine the light of Christ.
• According to Paul, what are the signs that we are living in the light?
• When have you seen someone really light up a room?
• What are some of the shameful and unfruitful works of darkness you see in the lives of nonbelievers?
• Where do you see opportunities to shine the light of Christ in your community? Discuss the following quote: “Lighthouses don’t fire cannons to call attention to their shining—they just shine.”(1) —Dwight L. Moody

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: Discuss with your student ways that you can fill your entire life with light. How could this influence your relationship with Jesus?
• COMMUNITY: Share with your student the need for an accountability partner. If he or she does not already have a person to share with, help your student to create a list of potential people.
• CULTURE: Identify areas of darkness in your community. How can you and your student act as lights in those places of darkness? Commit to praying for those dark places this week.

Conversation Starters: I Am Just Passing Through

Posted by Karah

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: We all have a place we call home; it shows up on legal documents as our place of residence. Even though we may live there all our lives, that place is temporary for the follower of Christ. We have a permanent, eternal home in Christ. While we have obligations related to our current residence, we can live our lives in such a way to remind ourselves and others that we have a greater home in Christ.

Concept: I Am Just Passing Through

Preschool

Matthew 14:22-23

LIFE POINT: Jesus told His disciples to go to the other side of the lake in a boat. Then Jesus went up the mountain to pray. After many hours, the boat was far from land. A strong wind was blowing the boat. Jesus came to His disciples, walking on the water. When the disciples saw Him, they were afraid. Jesus spoke to them and said, “Do not be afraid.” Peter said, “Jesus, if it really is You, let me walk to You on the water.” Jesus replied, “Come.” Peter began to walk on the water to Jesus. When Peter saw the wind blowing the water, he became afraid. Peter began to sink. He cried out for Jesus to help him. Jesus took Peter’s hand. Jesus and Peter got into the boat, and the wind stopped blowing. Jesus’ disciples were amazed. “It is true. He is God’s Son,” they said.

LIVE IT OUT: Does your child imitate you? Have you heard your words coming out of her mouth? Imitation is one of the ways children learn. Talk with your child about some of the things Jesus did. Ask her how she could do some things like Jesus.

Kids

Matthew 14:22-23

The wind was blowing and waves hit the boat. Jesus came to the boat, walking on the water. The disciples saw Jesus and were afraid. They thought they were seeing a ghost. Jesus called to them to be brave and not to be afraid. Peter looked at Jesus and asked if he could come out on the water. Jesus told Peter to come to Him. Peter started walking on the water, but when Peter saw the storm, he began to sink. Peter yelled for Jesus’ help. Jesus caught Peter. Jesus asked the boat began worshiping Jesus.

LIVE IT OUT: Talk with your child about some of his favorite Bible stories about Jesus. Discuss what Jesus was teaching through these stories about following Him and how people should live. Remind your child that, as Christians, we should strive to be like Jesus.

Students

1 Peter 2:11-17

THE POINT: Our lives in this world should reflect our eternal home.
• What place feels most like home to you?
• What does it look like for Christ-followers to live as strangers and exiles in our culture today?
• How can we navigate the tension between submitting to earthly authorities and submitting to God?
• What does it mean to be a slave to God yet live in freedom? Discuss the following quote:

My home is in Heaven. I’m just traveling through this world.”(1)—Billy Graham

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: Our freedom was bought by Jesus in order for us to serve and glorify Him. Evaluate how you have been successful in this and how you have failed. Discuss with your student ways you an express thanks for your freedom from sin.
• COMMUNITY: Consider ways you can use your freedom to serve Jesus by helping someone in your community.
• CULTURE: We all fail sometimes to live as Jesus would. Discuss this concept with your student and create a list of ways you can deal with failure and glorify God.

Conversation Starters: I Am a Minister

Posted by Karah

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: While we can be thankful for the work of our pastors, church leaders or camp counselors, ministry is not just for a select few. Some people are set apart for specific offices and ministries within the church, but we are all given the privilege of doing the work of a minister. The call to follow Christ is a call to serve Him, and we serve Him through the opportunities He gives us to serve others.

Preschool

Matthew 3:1-6, 13-17; Luke 3:1-22; John 1:18-37

LIFE POINT: God had a special job for John. God wanted him to tell people about Jesus. John lived in the desert and wore a leather belt around his waist. His clothes were made of camel hair, and he ate locusts and wild honey. John told the people, “Someone who is more powerful and greater than I will come.” He wanted the people to understand that God had sent him to tell about Jesus. John baptized many people. One day Jesus went to the river where John was. John knew that Jesus was God’s Son. John baptized Jesus, placing Him under the water for a few seconds. Then a dove appeared, and God’s voice was heard saying that Jesus was God’s Son. John did what God told him to do. He taught people about Jesus.

LIVE IT OUT: Your child may want to know more about baptism after hearing this week’s Bible story. If she has never seen a baptism, make an appointment to visit the baptistry in your church. Remind your child that God sent Jesus to earth because He loves us.

Kids

Matthew 3:1-6, 13-17; Luke 3:1-22; John 1:18-37

LIFE POINT: John the Baptist was given a special job by God. He was to tell people about Jesus. John traveled all around the area of the Jordan River, teaching that Jesus was the Savior, the one and only Son of God. He told people to ask for forgiveness for their sins and to be baptized. John told everyone the good new that Jesus was coming soon. One day Jesus went to the Jordan River. John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the God’s Son, who takes away the sins of the world!” John was talking about Jesus. Jesus asked John to baptize Him. John was surprised, but he baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. After Jesus was baptized, the Spirit of God came down from heaven like a dove. Then they heard a voice from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him!”

LIVE IT OUT: Depending on the age of your child, the Holy Spirit may be new information for your child. Tell your child that when he became, or becomes, a Christian, the Holy Spirit will always be present in his life.

Students

2 Corinthians 3:4-12

THE POINT: God works through us to make a difference.
• What’s a chore you’d love to “outsource” to someone else?
• What do these verses teach us about our role in God’s work?
• How do we make sure that God gets the glory for our ministry?
• What does it look like to serve Christ with boldness in today’s culture? Discuss the following quote:

“Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.”(1)—Corrie Ten Boom

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out in the Personal Study Guide. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: We serve and love others just as Christ first loved and served us. Discuss with your student ways Christ has ministered to him or her.
• COMMUNITY: How can your family come together this week to serve and minister to others in your community? Consider inviting another family to join you or including other students in your church family.
• CULTURE: People that are not a part of God’s family do not always understand a culture that is not self-oriented. How can your family demonstrate service that is other-oriented?

Conversation Starters: I Am a Child of the King

Posted by Karah

CONNECTION POINT: The Bible helps people know they are part of God’s family.

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents generally love their own children to a greater degree than they love other children. Parents may wish the best for others, but they will take care of their own first. God desires the best for us, even when we are outside His family. Through Christ, He made it possible for us to become a part of His family. Those who trust Jesus are no longer on the outside looking in; they are His children.

Concept: I Am a Child of the King

Preschool

Jonah

LIFE POINT: God told Jonah, “Go to the city of Nineveh. Tell the people they have been making wrong choices.” Jonah got on a boat to sail far away. God sent a great storm that almost broke apart the boat. The sailors were afraid. The men woke Jonah and told him to call out to God. They knew Jonah was running away from God. Jonah told the men to toss him into the sea and they would be safe. The men threw Jonah into the water. God sent a big fish to swallow Jonah. While he was in the fish, Jonah asked God to help him obey. After three days and nights, the fish spit Jonah onto land. Jonah went to Nineveh. He told the people that God was not happy because they had been doing wrong things. The people listened to Jonah and obeyed God.

LIVE IT OUT: Help your child look through the Bible to find God’s name. Allow him to use a yellow crayon or highlighting marker to mark the name. Say a prayer thanking God for giving us the Bible that helps people know about Him.

Kids

Jonah

LIFE POINT: God told Jonah to go to Nineveh to preach. Jonah didn’t want to go. He chose to get on a ship going to another place. A strong storm came that nearly sank the ship. Jonah knew that God sent the storm. He told the sailors to throw him overboard. The sailors threw Jonah overboard. Now Jonah was inside a fish. God had sent the fish that swallowed him. Jonah began to pray to God. After a time, God told the fish to spit Jonah out on dry land. Again, God told Jonah to go to Nineveh. This time Jonah obeyed and went to Nineveh. Jonah preached all over the city. The people believed God’s message. They turned from their sins. God told Jonah that He loved and cared for the people of Nineveh.

LIVE IT OUT: Help your child memorize 2 Timothy 3:16. This verse gives an overview of how the Bible impacts our lives. Ask your child to name some things she has learned from the Bible.

Students

Galatians 4:1-7

THE POINT: Jesus makes us full members of His family.
• What comes to mind when you hear the word “royalty”?
• What milestones have you reached that help you realize you are no longer a child?
• What are the implications of being adopted into God’s family?
• What are some ways we can rely on the Holy Spirit in our daily lives? Discuss the following quote:

“God’s family, which comes into being by regeneration, is more central and more lasting than the human family that comes into being by procreation.”(1) —John Piper

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: We are a part of God’s family and it’s amazing that He considers us His and celebrates that love. Consider ways you can celebrate being a part of Jesus’ family within your own family.
• COMMUNITY: Our church is also a part of our family. How can you serve another family in your church this week?
• CULTURE: Even though we tell others about Jesus and they hear the gospel, they do not always chose to join God’s family. Discuss this possibility with your student and consider ways you can pray for friends who are choosing to live outside our family.

Conversation Starters: I Am Wonderfully Made

Posted by Karah

CONNECTION POINT: The Bible helps people know the value of life.

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Culture gives lip service to the value of life, but we deem some people more important because of what they contribute to society. Even on a personal level, we may feel more or less valued based on our appearance or what we do in our church, workplace, or community. And society sends this skewed message about the unborn, disabled, and elderly. Psalm 139 points us to an all-knowing, all-loving God who values each one of us.

Concept: I Am Wonderfully Made

Preschool

Daniel 6

LIFE POINT: Daniel was a man who followed God. King Darius planned to put Daniel in charge of all the land. The other leaders did not like this. The men went to the king and told him to make a law that no one could worship or pray to God. If anyone broke this law, he would be put in the lions’ den. Daniel heard the law. But Daniel knew he should worship and pray to God. The other leaders told the king about Daniel. The king knew that Daniel had to go into the lions’ den. “May your God protect you,” the king said to Daniel. Daniel was put into the lions’ den. The next morning, Darius rushed to the den. He called out to Daniel. Daniel said, “God protected me from the lions.” Darius was happy that Daniel was safe! Darius wrote a law for all people to obey God.

LIVE IT OUT: Ask your child to name some things the Bible tells us to do, such as love God, love others, be kind, and love Jesus. Review the Bible story of Daniel in the lions’ den. Comment that Daniel knew the right thing to do.

Kids

Daniel 6

LIFE POINT: The king wanted to put Daniel in charge of all the land. The other workers were jealous. They formed a plan. They went to the king. “We think that no one should pray to anyone but you for 30 days!” they said. “If someone does, throw him into the lions’ den!” The king signed a law that could not be changed. Daniel heard the law, but chose to obey God. He continued to pray to God. The other workers told the king. The king was upset because he didn’t want to throw Daniel into the lions’ den. Men put Daniel in with the lions and rolled a stone over the door. The king sealed the opening. He was upset could not sleep. The next morning, the king hurried to the lions’ den. He called out to Daniel and Daniel answered. God had saved Daniel. The king was happy! He praised Daniel’s God as the living God.

LIVE IT OUT: How can you help your child be an example to others? Discuss ways he can let others see his integrity and obedience to God in his everyday life. This can provide an opportunity to talk to others about how the Bible guides a Christian’s life.

Students

Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18

THE POINT: Every life counts—including mine.
• What is something you’ve made with your own hands?
• How does it make you feel to know that God is aware of every aspect of your life?
• Where in our culture do we see life being devalued or disrespected?
• How does knowing we are fearfully and wonderfully made impact the way you see yourself and others? Discuss the following quote:

“Without a purpose, life is motion without meaning, activity without direction, and events without reason.” (1)—Rick Warren

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: Discuss with your student the idea that long before they were loved by you, he or she was loved by God and was created by God for His purposes.
• COMMUNITY: Help your student to memorize Psalm 139:13-14 this week. Practice each night before bed and pray that the words would settle in your hearts and help you to better see the world around you.
• CULTURE: Consider ways you and your student can help people in your community to feel loved. Follow through on your ideas and spread love to those that feel unlovable.

Conversation Starters: Jesus Transforms

Posted by Karah

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Our world is full of many “brands” of Christianity, because individuals and groups pick and choose the parts of the Bible they want to follow or interpret in their own way. Biblical Christianity, though, is just that—biblical—and calls us to obey the whole of Scripture. Jesus calls us to a higher standard, a standard not grounded in ourselves, but grounded in His loving commands meant to transform us from the inside out.

Concept: Jesus Transforms

Preschool

Matthew 2:1-12

LIFE POINT: Wise men watched the stars. They saw a new star shining brightly. This new star meant that God’s Son had been born. They wanted to see the special child and give Him gifts. The wise men followed the star to Jerusalem. They asked about the special baby. King Herod was not happy to hear about Jesus. The prophets wrote a long time ago that a special baby would be born in Bethlehem. King Herod told the wise men to go to Bethlehem. He told them to tell him where they found the baby, because he wanted to see Jesus, too. The wise men followed the star to the house where Jesus and His family lived. They bowed down and thanked God for sending Jesus. The wise men gave Jesus gifts—gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The wise men returned home a different way.

LIVE IT OUT: Remind your preschooler that the wise men knew that Jesus was a special child. With your child, talk about what makes Jesus special. Say the Bible Verse: “Thank You, God, for Jesus. Luke 2:38.”

Kids

Matthew 2:1-12

LIFE POINT: After Jesus was born, wise men came to Jerusalem. They asked, “Where is the new King of the Jews? We saw His star. We want to worship Him.” King Herod called the priests and asked them where the Messiah would be born. The priests reported that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. King Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem. He said, “When you find the child, tell me. I want to worship Him.” The wise men followed the star until it stopped over the house where the child was. They were filled with joy! The wise men went in the house. They saw Mary and Jesus. They dropped to their knees in worship. Then the wise men gave Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Later, the wise men took a different way back to their country.

LIVE IT OUT: Does your family worship Jesus at home? The wise men worshiped Jesus by bowing down to Him and presenting Him gifts. Discuss with your child what gifts she could give to Jesus.

Students

Mark 7:5-15

THE POINT: Jesus calls us to a higher standard.
• What are a couple of your favorite family Christmas traditions?
• What are some factors that cause Christians today to neglect God’s commands?
• What might tempt people to twist God’s commands?
• How can we make sure our hearts are truly pure as opposed to only appearing to be pure? Discuss the following quote:

“You cannot make men good by law.”(1)—C. S. Lewis

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: Discuss with your student ways that you can each grow by showing a greater love for others this Christmas. Think beyond just actions and consider your heart, mind, and soul too.
• COMMUNITY: Loving God also means loving other people. Pray with your student for sincere hearts that love Jesus by serving others. Consider ways you can express his love to those in need this winter.
• CULTURE: God looks at our hearts. Discuss with your student ways that you can show lost people that pleasing God is a matter of the heart.

Conversation Starters: Jesus Saves

Posted by Karah

CONNECTION POINT: Jesus was born to help people know God.

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: The story of Christmas—the birth of Jesus—is a familiar one to so many. Familiarity may cause many people to lose sight of what God accomplished with that event and the reason Jesus came. Unfortunately many people leave Jesus in the manger, and fail to look beyond His birth to discover that God came to earth to bring us to Himself.

Concept: Jesus Saves

Preschool

Luke 2:1-20

LIFE POINT: The leader of their country decided to count all the people in the land. While waiting for Jesus to be born, Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem, Joseph’s hometown, to be counted. Bethlehem was crowded with people. Mary and Joseph could not find a place to stay. They found a place where they could rest. That night Jesus was born. Mary wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a manger. Nearby, shepherds were watching their sheep. An angel appeared and said, “Do not be afraid. I have good news for you! A baby was born in Bethlehem. He is God’s Son. You will find Him lying in a manger.” The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem. They found Baby Jesus lying in the manger, just as the angel had said. The shepherds told everyone what they had seen and heard. They thanked God for Baby Jesus.

LIVE IT OUT: Help your child focus on Jesus during the Christmas season. Read the Christmas story from Luke 2. Read from children’s books, like The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd Jones, about Jesus’ birth. God sent Jesus to earth, and Jesus was born.

Kids

Luke 2:1-20

LIFE POINT: Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem to be counted. In Bethlehem, Baby Jesus was born. Mary wrapped Him in soft cloths. She laid Him in a manger, a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn. Nearby, shepherds watched their sheep. An angel of God appeared. They were afraid! The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I tell you good news for all people. Today a Savior has been born in Bethlehem. You will find the baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly, many angels appeared. They praised God, saying, “Glory to God in the highest. Peace on earth to those He favors!” The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem. They found Mary, Joseph, and the baby. The shepherds told others about the angel’s message. Everyone who heard it was amazed!

LIVE IT OUT: Jesus was born! Christmas is the day we celebrate that God sent Jesus. Because Jesus was born, died, and rose again, we can choose to believe in Jesus and have eternal life with God. Celebrate with your family by singing your favorite Christmas carols that are about the birth of the Savior.

Students

Luke 2:8-11, 15-18

THE POINT: Jesus was born to bring us into a relationship with God.
• What would you love to add to your celebration of Christmas?
• When have you experienced God’s perfect timing?
• What do these verses teach us about the purpose of Jesus’ birth?
• What steps can we take to glorify God during the Christmas season? Discuss the following quote:

“I want no Christmas without a burden for lost souls, a message for sinners, a heart to bring in the lost sheep so dear to the Shepherd.” (1) —John R. Rice

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: When the shepherds heard the news of Jesus, they went straight to see Him and shared the news with the world. How can your family share this same good news with the world today?
• COMMUNITY: During times of pursuing Jesus, how will you and your family share that passion with other believers?
• CULTURE: Challenge your student to consider how our Christmas celebrations should look different and how you can be lights in the darkness this season.

Conversation Starters: Jesus Rules

Posted by Karah

CONNECTION POINT: Jesus gives people hope for the future.

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: If you’ve ever been in an area hit by a flood, tornado, or hurricane, you know you can only do so much to protect yourself. The forces of nature are powerful, but Jesus is more so—and He is present with His followers in everything they face. Mary, the mother of Jesus, also had to trust the Lord when her world turned upside down. During any storm, the Lord is with us, and He invites us to trust Him.

Preschool

Luke 1:39-56

LIFE POINT: An angel had told Mary that she was chosen to be the mother of God’s Son. Mary went to visit an older relative named Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary speak, Elizabeth knew something special was going to happen to Mary. Elizabeth told Mary how special she was because of the baby she was going to have. Mary sang a praise song to God. She sang, “You do great things. You are kind to all people. You keep your promises.” Mary thanked God for the promises He had given. Mary knew God would keep the promises He told her. Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months, and then she returned to her home in the town of Nazareth.

LIVE IT OUT: Christmas is a happy time to celebrate with your preschooler. Locate some happy Christmas songs you can sing with your child. Enjoy singing them together in the car or at home. Tell your child that Mary was happy and sang a song to God.

Luke 1:39-56

LIFE POINT: Mary traveled to see Elizabeth, part of her family. The angel Gabriel had told Mary that Elizabeth was going to have a baby, even though Elizabeth was old. Mary called out a greeting to Elizabeth. As soon as Elizabeth heard the sound, the baby inside her jumped! God’s Spirit filled Elizabeth. Elizabeth said to Mary, “You are the most blessed of all women. Your child will be blessed! How wonderful that the mother of my Lord has come to me! When I heard your voice, the baby inside me jumped for joy! You are blessed because God will do what He said!” Mary began to praise God. She told of the greatness of God. She told how God had been good to her. She thanked God for what He had already done and what He would do. Mary stayed for three months. Then Mary went home.

LIVE IT OUT: Does your family celebrate Jesus during Christmas? Discuss with your child ways to make Jesus the focus of all you do during the season. Read an Advent study together, like Kids Read Truth, or think of ways to show the love of Jesus to those less fortunate.

Students

Mark 4:35-41

THE POINT: You can trust Jesus in the storm.
• What’s the craziest weather you’ve ever experienced?
• Why are we often surprised when we encounter difficult circumstances?
• How do the trials of life compare and contrast with a physical storm?
• What lessons can we learn from Jesus’ calming of the storm? Discuss the following quote:

“God brings storms into your life to show His strength and to gain glory from His providence.” (1)—Paul Chappell

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: Challenge your student to name examples of how God has proven to be faithful to him or her in the past. Share some examples from your own life.
• COMMUNITY: Discuss with your student people who may be encouraging in his or her faith journey. If they do not have someone to fill this role, pray with your student for the right person to come along. Pray that your student would also fulfill this role for someone else and encourage others in their faith.
• CULTURE: How can you help your student clearly see the blessings of living by faith when surround by worldly concerns?

Conversation Starters: Jesus Teaches

Posted by Karah

CONNECTION POINT: Families are part of God’s plan for people.

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: The Bible gets a lot of respect in America—at least superficial respect. Eighty percent of adults consider the Bible a holy book, but few read it. Even among Christians, only 11 percent read the Bible daily, and 34 percent rarely read it. Many of us pay lip service to the Bible but miss out on the joy and abundant life that comes from applying its truth to our lives.

Concept: Jesus Teaches

Preschool

Luke 1:26-38; Matthew 1:18-24

LIFE POINT: Mary was a young woman who obeyed God. She was going to be married to Joseph. God sent an angel to talk to Mary. The angel said, “Do not be afraid. God has chosen you to be the mother of a special baby, God’s Son.” He told her that this was part of God’s plan. Mary did not understand. The angel said, “God can do things that people think are impossible.” Mary said, “I will do what God wants.” One night when Joseph was sleeping, God sent an angel to him in a dream. The angel said, “Do not be afraid to marry Mary. Her baby is God’s Son. You will name Him Jesus. He will love people and teach them about God.” Joseph remembered the dream when he woke up. He did as the angel said. Joseph married Mary. Joseph and Mary waited for the special baby, Jesus, to be born.

LIVE IT OUT: Remind your child that God chose Mary and Joseph to be Jesus’ family. Talk about your family and how members cares for others. Help your child make a book of family members by drawing on individual sheets of paper and stapling the pages together.

Kids

Luke 1:26-38; Matthew 1:18-24

LIFE POINT: Mary, who lived in the town of Nazareth, was visited by an angel. “Be happy,” the angel said. “God is with you.” Mary wondered what kind of greeting this was. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. You will have a son and you will call Him Jesus. He will be God’s Son.” Mary wondered how this could happen. The angel said, “God’s Spirit will come to you. The one born to you will be the Son of God.” Mary answered that she would obey God. Joseph wondered what to do. He knew he was not the father of Mary’s baby. As he slept, an angel came to him. “Joseph, don’t be afraid to marry Mary. Her baby is God’s own Son. You are to name Him Jesus. He will save His people from their sins.” Joseph took Mary for his wife. When the baby was born, Joseph and Mary named Him Jesus.

LIVE IT OUT: Help your child memorize the Bible verse, Matthew 1:21. This verse contains the angel’s words to Joseph. God committed Jesus to the family of Joseph. Help your child understand that God chose a family for Jesus because that is His plan for all children.

Students

Mark 4:1-9

THE POINT: Obeying Jesus’ teachings leads to productive living.
• What’s the best way for you to learn something new?
• What are the benefits and challenges of using stories to reveal truth?
• Where do you see each of these soils represented in our culture?
• What kinds of “fruit” should be evident in our lives when we obey Jesus’ teaching? Discuss the following quote:

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.(1)—Robert Louis Stephenson

LIVE IT OUT: Encourage your student to take practical steps to take his or her faith and Live It Out. Here are some ways you can encourage your students to live out their faith with Christ personally, in community, and in their culture:
• CHRIST: Take the time this week to ask your student how he or she is rooting out bad habits, while strengthening good habits to grow better in his or her relationship with Christ.
• COMMUNITY: Discuss ways you and your student can purposefully plant seeds of discipleship in your community this week.
• CULTURE: When spreading seeds of discipleship, we have to reach out to people around us and connect in ways that make sense to them. Discuss how you and your student can better relate to the culture around you and spread the gospel.
